Are there any non-prescription medications I can try for my Acne?

Some non-prescription (or over-the-counter) products contain:

  • Benzoyl peroxide 2.5 - 10% (Oxy 5® or 10®).
  • Salicylic acid 0.5 - 2% (Clearasil®, Stridex®, Neutrogena®, etc.)
  • Sulfur 3 - 10% (Clearasil AdultCare®, etc.)

These over-the-counter acne medications are available as lotions, gels, creams and soaps. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and sulfur work by removing dead skin cells and drying the skin. Benzoyl peroxide also works by fighting the bacteria that is most likely to cause acne. If this does not help, then speak to your physician or a dermatologist regarding prescription acne medications.
