Before taking over-the-counter or prescription medications for insomnia, your physician should perform a thorough evaluation of your symptoms and your overall health. There is no "magic pill" to treat insomnia. Casue could be stress or other health conditions. Some prescription sedatives include:
- flurazepam (Dalmane®)
- quazepam (Doral®)
- temazepam (Restoril®)
- triazolam (Halcion®)
I suggest that you talk to your primary physician to learn more about these and other prescription sedatives based on your overall health profile. Together, you and your physician can determine the best medication for you.
You may have heard of many herbal products and dietary supplements that contain:
- passion flower
- valerian root
Also, there are herbal products and dietary supplements for sleep disorders that contain things like passion flower, chamomile and valerian root. Just keep in mind that unlike prescription and OTC medications, herbal products and dietary supplements are not reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Also, these products may not be right for you. They may cause unwanted side effects and may interact with other medications. Always remember to talk with your physician or pharmacist before taking any herbal product or dietary supplement.
Hope that helps! Be well...
